Classroom Set-UpThe Passion Project is designed for VELS level 4, with Grade 6 students being its intended target. The classroom environment will be organized, stimulating, and comfortable in order for students to learn effectively. The classroom set-up will be practical in its physical layout, supplying diverse materials and supplies, and encouraging students to have a sense of belonging and ownership. The classroom will be made up of various learning centres. At the start of the year students will be a part of the decision making process into where they think the different learning centers should go. Additionally students will help define what behaviour is appropriate within the classroom and help their peers behave appropriately when there is a breach. The classroom will be equipped with both a class set of Apple Mac computer and student supplied iPads. The school will have a Year 5 requirement that ensures all students are with their own iPad hardware. This enables each student to be familiar with their device through informal trial and error practices as well as formal ICT teaching in the classroom. The Passion Project software requirements are not exhaustive as many programs come pre-installed on the Mac/iPad and others will already have been installed the previous year (Year 5). For the duration of The Passion Project unit, there will be a heavy use of computer hardware and thus all work stations will endeavour to face away from windows to keep glare and sunlight off the screens. Display boards will be used for student work and other relevant information such as having easy access to the Planning Document. There will be separate learning centres to accommodate high activity from other areas like Reading where the students need a more quiet and less busy space to work. Furthermore, there will be an area set aside for small groups to meet. This area can also be utilised for the teacher to extend or help particular student groups. All students will have a clear view of the interactive whiteboard when necessary and whole group activities and discussions will take place in a circle to promote participation. |
